Can I get benefits?

In the Netherlands, you may be entitled to extra money from the government, known as benefits. There are different types of benefits, and which ones apply to you depend on your personal situation.

Do you often run short on money? Benefits might be a solution. In this article, you will find out which benefits are available and whether you may be eligible for them.

We refer you to Mijn Toeslagen and the trial calculation tool, which are in Dutch. If you’re not familiar with the language, we suggest you ask someone to assist you.

Want to know which benefits you qualify for?

You can do a trial calculation on the website of the Belastingdienst (only in Dutch).

1. Healthcare benefit (‘zorgtoeslag’)

Everyone living in the Netherlands must have health insurance, which can be expensive. In 2025, the average monthly cost is €157. If you have a low income, you may not be able to afford this. In that case, you might qualify for healthcare benefit. You must be 18 or older. If eligible, the government will provide you with a monthly payment to help cover the cost.

2. Rent benefit (‘huurtoeslag’)

Do you pay rent for a home and have a low income and little savings? Then you might be eligible for rent benefit, which helps cover part of your rent. Whether you qualify depends on:

  • Your monthly rent;
  • Your income;
  • Your age;
  • Your place of residence.

3. Supplementary child benefit (‘kindgebonden budget’)

Do you have one or more children under 18 and a low income? You may be entitled to a supplementary child benefit. The amount depends on the number of children, their age, and your income. Stepchildren and foster children also count for this benefit.

4. Childcare benefit (‘kinderopvangtoeslag’)

Do you want to send your child to daycare or a childminder? Then you are often eligible for childcare benefit. The amount depends on your income.

5. Benefits for single parents

Are you a single parent? You may be entitled to additional benefits. These include child benefit and childcare benefit. You may also qualify for tax discounts or a single-parent benefit. Do a trial calculation on to find out which allowances apply to your situation.

How to apply for benefits

You can apply for national benefits via Mijn toeslagen (only in Dutch). To log in, you will need a , which you can request on the official DigiD website.

Receiving too much benefit

Sometimes, you may receive more benefits than you were entitled to. This often happens due to changes in your situation, which must be reported to the Belastingdienst.

Two examples

  • You started earning more but didn’t report it. The Belastingdienst still calculates based on your old income, but your new income should also count.
  • You moved in with someone. You and your partner are now ‘benefit partners’ , meaning your partner’s income is included in the calculation. This often results in lower benefits.

If you have received too many benefits, you will need to repay it. At the end of the year, the Belastingdienst calculates this, and you may receive a bill. This can be an unpleasant surprise.

You can prevent this situation. If there are any changes in your personal situation or your partner’s, report them as soon as possible to the Belastingdienst. This reduces the chance of having to repay money at the end of the year.

Payment plan for repaying benefits

If you cannot repay the money all at once, you may be able to arrange a payment plan. Contact the Belastingdienst for more information.
